Is it cheaper to “Dry hire” – without an operator and operate the machine myself – or “wet hire – inclusive of experienced, skilled licensed operator)?
Often it is far more expensive to dry hire a machine and operate it yourself for several reasons when comparing it to “Wet hire”

  1. When you Wet hire a machine it is provided with a skilled, experienced, and licenced operator that is familiar with the machine, familiar with its capabilities – which also means they know how to get the best productive work out of the machine in the safest quickest time, they also know the safe working limits of the machine and are far less likely to have an accident or worse yet cause injury to persons or property.
  1. The wet hire of a machine is “All Inclusive” of:
  • Operator wages and allowances
  • Workers insurance
  • Public liability insurance
  • Fuel usage
  • Transport to and from site
  • Wear of the machines ground engaging tools.
  • Repairs and maintenance

Worth taking into serious consideration is if the job requires any specialised attachments such as augers, rock breakers etc. there may be an additional charge for the hire or supply of the attachment, but much the same as the machine itself the benefits are like the ones listed just above. Wet hire including an experienced qualified operator who must also have verification of competency to operate the specialised attachment. This time and time again result in quicker, skilled, and safer operation of the machine and attachments Remember time is money and when it generally takes a lessor experienced operator longer to complete the same job the overall cost can get away from you, so are you really better off cost-wise, Typically not.

Further, take into consideration the result and quality of the job you are wanting to achieve. You can best answer this by acknowledging that someone who performs any task time and time again, year upon year upon year will do a far better job in faster time to a higher standard and quality than someone who has far less experience. You wouldn’t reasonably or logically ask your electrician to paint your house and expect a fast, top-quality cheaper job, would you?

Is the cheaper provider of services providing you with prices / rates for like-for-like plant, equipment, and any attachments?
The wrong machine for the job, may end up costing you more or worse yet will not get the job done.
Is their equipment late model, fully maintained and serviced in reliable working condition?
Breakdowns cost not only time but money. While some breakdowns can be inevitable, they certainly are avoidable through good maintenance. Well serviced and looked after machines are far less likely to breakdown.
Is the operator industry experienced, skilled and with qualifications and tickets to not only operate the machine, but any attachments?
Are they skilled enough to operate the machine to its safest full operational capacity?

Sometimes a price differential between competitors for your business is unavoidable. Our experience has given multiple examples where a competitor has been cheaper, yet the end cost to the client was greater due to:

  • the competitor providing unsuitable machinery to do the job, if it takes longer, it will cost you more.
  • If the machine provided were to break down, it will cost you more.
  • If the competitor’s operator is less experienced and skilled, it will take longer, it will cost you more.

If it’s not done correctly, to a high quality and standard, it will cost you more to have them or someone else or do it over again.

What is GPS Machine Guidance Control Systems and why should I use them?
GPS short for Global Positioning Systems is a group of satellites orbiting approximately 17,700 Kilometres above the earth. Each satellite sends out a radio signal at a known wavelength and time which is so precise that enables measurements such as location, depth, height to be produced in “live time” relay.

Industry over many years has developed fit for purpose programmes that are applicable to the civil earthmoving industry worldwide.

GPS machine control systems all have many things in common. Scrapers, Excavators, blades, and even tractors all must use the same basic philosophy when utilizing GPS. All GPS systems receive signals from satellites in the sky broadcasting positions; a base station on your job site picks up these signals. The base station “learns” where it is and “locks” in its position.

Once the base knows where it is, it can read the GPS signals and send the working machines the positional error corrections. The computers on board the moving machines receive these messages via radio or mobile phone signals over 20 times per second, as their location changes, and generate coordinates for the computer to compare grade.

GPS Machine Control: Think of the machines as rovers, with blades on them. Basically, the machine is trying to attain grade, while the rover is trying to determine deviance from that grade. Imagine doing both at the same time and then having computerised movement of the blade fixes the difference.

Thus, the reason GPS machine control and guidance has been pursued, all the work is done from the same reference point in space, in accordance with the plans specific to the job, making work faster and far more accurate than historical methods ever could produce.

By using GPS systems, an area or project worksite can be excavated to a far more accurate depth and width, more quickly, minimising over-excavation, which in turn has the knock-on benefit less material required in backfill, the overall and overwhelming result is less time, less material, greater accuracy, less cost, greater profit.
